Supremely intellectual, Melchior keeps careful watch over his dear
old friend, Kaspar in the stable.
Melchior is based on the
commanding baritone king in
Menotti’s
opera, “Amahl and the Night Visitors.”
In the European tradition of an elaborate creche scene, or presipio, he
is costumed more in a spirit of extravagance than historical accuracy.
