Three Kings The Stable

My kings come from Menotti's opera, "Amahl and the Night Visitors." In my Creche they have found Mary and her Child. They let old King Kaspar present his gift first so he can rest on his stool. He's probably humming a little tune to himself. Balthasar has just placed his gift at Mary's feet. She is quite overwhelmed by his fierce demeanor and his fabulous full length fur cape. Melchior keeps discreet watch over his elderly friend.

Melchior was the first doll I ever made from scratch. I didn't know enough to reinforce his fingers with wire so they kept breaking off. Eventually I had to replace his hands altogether. Kaspar and Balthasar have acquired more rings to cover the breaks in their fingers.

Menotti's Kaspar is old and charmingly doddering, so I seated him on a little fringed stool I made specially for him. For some reason, Mary kept falling back and had to be propped on a little folded blanket.  The next year, the kneeling Joseph persisted in tipping forward due to the extended weight of his head and hands. But as soon as I placed him behind Mary with his protective hands on her arms, they held each other up... just like a real marriage. The manger is twigs of live oak woven together and filled with real straw. The baby's body is fully sculpted inside its swaddling clothes.

My Creche is displayed at my church through Advent until Epiphany. This last Christmas, our interim pastor said, "But you gotta have a shepherd." So I let him decide the age and posture of the shepherd. I still need to add the poor shepherd boy Amahl.

As the population of the Creche grows, so must the setting. Made in 2'x4' segments, the first unit was the shallow grotto carved into a barren hillside. The next unit formed a rocky plateau for the kings to occupy. Pastor's new shepherd got stuck up on the hilltop, so I need to add another unit to the side for him and Amahl. I hear the innkeeper plans to roof over some of the area in front of the grotto.
