Although he places his gift
quite reverently, Mary is
a little frightened of the tall, mysterious king.
Balthasar is based on the bass king in
Menotti’s opera, “Amahl and the Night Visitors.”
In the European tradition of an elaborate creche scene, or presipio, he
is costumed more in a spirit of extravagance than historical accuracy.

COSTUME: Black gilt velvet tunic, gold silk breeches, leather belt with
antique metallic ornament, antique mink cape.

trimmed in red and gold, and silver metallic chainmail drape. Fur lined
leather boots, rings, bracelets.
